Making Money Your

How to Get Student Discounts Forever

Holiday discounts be damned, nothing saves you money like an old fashioned student discount. Here's how to continue making use of those discounts long after your time as a student has passed.

Before we get started, let's considere the ethical implications. Using a student discount when you're not a student is a little dishonest, so if you're a sparkling example of morality you might want to forget this method and keep paying full price. If you live life in the more common moral gray area, you might want to consider the following excuses. First of all, student discounts are most commonly awarded to college students who either are wealthy enough to afford college or are able to incur a massive amount of debt (scholarship folk—congrats, but you're a rare breed and therefore do not count). The idea here is that college students aren't necessarily stricken with poverty or will be more so after finishing their education. For that reason, the student discount might actually be better applied after a student has graduated. If you agree with this reasoning, welcome to the forever student discount club.

The Sticker Method

Some colleges update their student ID cards every year with a date as proof of current enrollment, but that's an added and unnecessary expense for most. Some just don't bother with dates at all, but a more common compromise is the sticker. Many colleges will provide a dated sticker each semester so students can prove they're up-to-date on their tuition and prove enrollment to companies offering discounts. Fortunately, these stickers are incredibly easy to forge after you've graduated.

If you just need a digital photo of your ID (for online shopping), Photoshopping a forgery is pretty simple. The example above is just a simple Photoshop forgery. If you need the actual ID card in all its physical glory (for in-store shopping), you can easily take your Photoshop forgery and recreate it with a regular inkjet printer and some sticker paper. You can get sticker paper in all colors and finishes at your local office store, and if you find it's too hard to recreate a sticker you can just remove the existing stickers to make your own version.

What if my ID has no sticker?

Maybe your student ID doesn't use a sticker at all. If this is the case, you're actually in a better situation because you can design your own. The important thing is to make a few fake stickers so it looks like you've been using them for awhile. Put one on, rub some dirt on it, wipe the dirt off with water, add the next sticker, do the same, and then put the clean one on top. Make it look used, and whatever sticker you design with be as believable as a real one.

The Unofficial Class Schedule

Some retailers require a class schedule or other proof of enrollment, or there may be situations where you just can't or don't want to use your student ID as proof. In those cases, it's incredibly easy to fake a class schedule. The best way to go about this is keep a copy of your class schedule when you're actually in college so you can refer to it when making the forgery. Most times it's nothing more than a text document and a college logo in the background (which is something you can easily acquire via Google image search). If you're sending the schedule via email and it needs to come from your school, it's pretty easy to spoof an outgoing email address. Overall this is a pretty simple undertaking, but, in general, you'll be fine with just an ID card.

Enlist the Youth of Tomorrow

Just like underage kids try to get older folks to buy them beer, you can enlist the help of college kids to get you a student discount. If you haven't made a little student of your own yet, or have relatives who can help you for free, you can often find students on Craiglist who are willing to loan out their student ID for a small fee. For $20 (give or take), you can get a college kid to accompany you to, say, the Apple Store, to pick up a new laptop. If you can't find such a posting, post yourself. Chances are you at least know a friend of a friend who knows someone in college, so if you ask nicely you should be able to get this service for free. Unlike the other suggestions, this tip will work for the rest of your discount-necessitating life.

Go Legit On the Cheap

If you feel bad about getting a student discount long after your time has passed, maybe it's time to become a student again. You don't have to go back for a degree, but local community colleges offer a lot of night classes you can take. If you have time, it's a chance to learn something you've always wanted to learn and you will—in most cases—wind up with a student ID. When you go to get a student discount you won't have to cheat the system because you're technically a student, even if it's not a full-time gig.

Got any other tips to prolong the life of your expired student ID card? Let's hear 'em in the comments!

As 2010 winds down, your April 2011 self will thank you for making some moves to lighten your tax bill and set your finances in order for the year ahead. Decisions you make in the next few weeks will have implications that last for months.

Yahoo Finance dishes up some savvy choices that will pay off as Father Time finally pulls the plug on the tortured year.

The article recommends maxing out charitable giving and contributions to retirement accounts in order to decrease your exposure to higher tax brackets, as well as maxing out tax-free retirement contributions and taking any vacation days that won't roll over into the next year.

Perhaps the most valuable piece of advice is to get organized. Culling together appropriate receipts and statements and setting them aside so they aren't mixed with stuff from next year will pay off when the tax crunch arrives.

What will you do the rest of the month to make sure you get off to a great start in 2011?

Whos Making Money

Wait, didn’t Rachel Maddow assure us on Friday that, unlike those mercenary wingnuts at Fox News who let Republican guests pitch donation URLs on the air, MSNBC is “not a political operation”? Six full minutes of fact-checkin’ fun here via Johnny Dollar, who not only spent hours piecing this lowlight reel together but has an accompanying post delving further into the hypocrisy. Somehow, Hannity and Palin raising money for conservatives is qualitatively different from Ed Schultz and Harold Ford doing the same for liberals. Which, I guess, is true: When Hannity and Palin push their side, they’re playing politics, whereas when Schultz and Ford push theirs, they’re making news. Please do take time to read his post and watch the clip; I promise, you’ll enjoy every minute.

As for the return of the modern-day Murrow to his perch atop Serious Newsman Mountain, this is simply too good not to be true:

“Keith is furious about the way this has all been handled and insisted that MSNBC bosses apologize to him before he would agree to return,” a network insider tells me. “Keith sees himself as the star of MSNBC, the person who put them on the map and discovered fellow network anchors Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell. To be treated like this by the network he helped shape, he considers disgusting.”…

“Keith clearly won this battle. Not only has he got the bosses to say sorry, but he’s also got the company to review its ethic rules,” a friend of Keith’s tells me. “You watch — his rating on Tuesday when he returns will be bigger than ever, giving him even more power at MSNBC.”

Jeff Bercovici at Forbes declares that this cements Olby’s status as the most powerful man at MSNBC, the thought of which seems to have Ace feeling depressed but which makes me perfectly happy. Remember, this is a guy whose buffoonery is such that even some JournoListers are left cringing at it. MSNBC’s hyperpartisan election night coverage was straight out of the Olby playbook, and predictably so alienating to everyone except far-left liberals that more than one TV critic acknowledged with teeth gnashed that Fox’s coverage was more balanced. Why wouldn’t you want him in charge? They should make him program director and give him extra airtime so that he doesn’t have to pare down his lists of who’s worse than Al Qaeda due to time constraints. And besides, as I said on Friday, his suspension was stupid to begin with. All’s well that ends well!

Every so often Warren Buffett goes on TV and calls for higher taxes. This from the guy who’s paid, according to Forbes, perhaps less than $10 million in taxes, a tiny percentage of his $50 billion net worth. I say perhaps because, to the best of my knowledge, Buffett has never made his tax returns public.

Buffett is big-business, with his Berkshire Hathaway holding company stock selling (today) at $119,675.00 per share. Berkshire Hathaway has 1 million shares, which means that Buffett heads a company worth more that the gross national product of a few small Latin American countries.

How does Buffett manage to pay so little in taxes? For one, Buffett, who wants everybody to pay for big-spending big government, donates sizable amounts to tax-exempt philanthropies, such as the Gates Foundation. Forbes, again,

He donates appreciated Berkshire Hathaway stock — which costs him pennies on the dollar — to charity, and receives a fat, juicy tax deduction at the appreciated price without having to pay a capital gains tax on the appreciation. (And, note that the money actually sits in his own charitable organization.) He’s saving income taxes with the ordinary deduction so it’s essentially a tax shelter.

He builds up his massive net worth and doesn’t have to sell stock while deferring capital gains. When he does take a capital gain, it’s at a 15% rate, and he lives in a low-tax state.

Buffett has been known to complain that he paid taxes on the lower-rated capital gains rate rather than the higher income-tax rate. Well, play me the world’s smallest violin, Warren.

Mind you, I’m all for capitalism. America is the greatest country in the world because historically it afforded its citizens the ability to legally prosper and live in abundance. What I object to is billionaires who got their own aiming to prevent anyone else from attaining the same, or more, as they.

This latest time around Buffett was on ABC’s This Week, and told Christiane Amanpour that “People at the high end, people like myself, should be paying more taxes”,

Making Money Work

If you are already selling on eBay; have you ever thought about selling on Amazon, you get different rates between the two depending on what you’re selling? Read on and I’ll explain the differences between the selling platforms.

If you have ever bought anything on Amazon, you may have seen the item offered by sellers too. There are individuals and businesses selling all kinds of goods on Amazon in the same way.

If you are selling on eBay it may be worth considering if you should also be selling on Amazon. It is safe to say that some items are better listed with eBay however Amazon might be the best choice for a different type of product. But there are many similarities between products selling well on both platforms.

What’s the difference?

The main difference between the sites is that eBay focuses mainly on the auction format whilst the Amazon Associates platform relies on a fixed price arrangement, although eBay also offers buy-it-now as a fixed price listing option.

Undoubtedly if you’re eager to shift something quick then the auction option is the best, although you may be disappointed with the end result if you haven’t set a reserve at the beginning of the sale.

For some businesses, especially those looking for a fixed price sale Amazon may be the preferred way forward especially if they are using this method on all their products. Even thought eBay is typically an auction site they’re moving more towards fixed price listings to compete more with the rise in Amazon’s market share in this area.

What are the Advantages?

There are some differences in the type of shoppers that use Amazon & eBay. eBayers tend to be the bargain hunters who will go to any lengths to find what they’re looking for cheaper, whilst Amazon shoppers tend to be more conventional, albeit looking for good value but at a fixed price. By selling on both sites you can take advantage of larger number of buyers that could potentially view and buy your products, giving you advantage over a number of your competitors and increasing your coverage.

Quiz: What's responsible for the lousy economy most Americans continue to wallow in?

A. Big government, bureaucrats, and the cultural and intellectual elites who back them.

B. Big business, Wall Street, and the powerful and privileged who represent them.

These are the two competing stories Americans are telling one another.

Yes, I know: It's more complicated than this. In reality, the lousy economy is due to insufficient demand -- the result of the nation's almost unprecedented concentration of income at the top. The very rich don't spend as much of their income as the middle. And since the housing bubble burst, the middle class hasn't had the buying power to keep the economy going. That concentration of income, in turn, is due to globalization and technological change -- along with unprecedented campaign contributions and lobbying designed to make the rich even richer and do nothing to help average Americans, insider trading, and political bribery.

So B is closer to the truth.

But A is the story Republicans and right-wingers tell. It's a dangerous story because it deflects attention from the real problem and makes it harder for America to focus on the real solution -- which is more widely shared prosperity. (I get into how we might do this in my new book, Aftershock.)

A is also the story President Obama is telling, indirectly, through his deficit commission, his freeze on federal pay, his freeze on discretionary spending, and his wavering on extending the Bush tax cuts for the rich.

Most other Washington Democrats are falling into the same trap.

If Obama and the Democrats were serious about story A they'd at least mention it. They'd tell the nation that income and wealth haven't been this concentrated at the top since 1928, the year before the Great Crash. They'd be indignant about the secret money funneled into midterm campaigns. They'd demand Congress pass the Disclose Act so the public would know where the money comes from.

They'd introduce legislation to curb Wall Street bonuses -- exactly what European leaders are doing with their financial firms. They'd demand that the big banks, now profitable after taxpayer bailouts, reorganize the mortgage debt of distressed homeowners. They'd call for a new WPA to put the unemployed back to work, and pay for it with a tax surcharge on incomes over $1 million.

They'd insist on extended unemployment benefits for log-term jobless who are now exhausting their benefits. And they'd hang tough on the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy -- daring Republicans to vote against extending the cuts for everyone else.

But Obama is doing none of this. Instead, he's telling story A.

Making a big deal out of the deficit -- appointing a deficit commission and letting them grandstand with a plan to cut $4 trillion out of the projected deficit over the next ten years -- $3 of government spending for every $1 of tax increase -- is telling story A.

What the public hears is that our economic problems stem from too much government and that if we reduce government spending we'll be fine.

Announcing a two-year freeze on federal salaries - explaining that "I did not reach this decision easily... these are people's lives" -- is also telling story A.

What the public hears is government bureaucrats are being paid too much, and that if we get the federal payroll under control we'll all be better off.

Proposing a freeze on discretionary (non-defense) spending is telling story A. So is signaling a willingness to extend the Bush tax cuts to the top. So is appointing his top economic advisor from Wall Street (as apparently he's about to do).

In fact, the unwillingness of the President and Washington Democrats to tell story B itself promotes story A, because in the absence of an alternative narrative the Republican story is the only one the public hears.

Obama's advisors explain that the president's moves are designed to "preempt" the resurgent Republicans -- just like Bill Clinton preempted the Gingrich crowd by announcing "the era of big government is over" and then tacking right.

They're wrong. By telling story A and burying story B, the president legitimizes everything the right has been saying. He doesn't preempt them; he fuels them. He gives them more grounds for voting against raising the debt ceiling in a few weeks. He strengthens their argument against additional spending for extended unemployment benefits. He legitimizes their argument against additional stimulus spending.

Bill Clinton had a rapidly expanding economy to fall back on, so his appeasement of Republicans didn't legitimize the Republican world view. Obama doesn't have that luxury. The American public is still hurting and they want to know why.

Unless the President and Democrats explain why the economy still stinks for most Americans and offer a plan to fix it, the Republican explanation and solution -- it's big government's fault, and all we need do is shrink it -- will prevail.

That will mean more hardship for tens of millions of Americans. It will make it harder to remedy the bad economy. And it will set Republicans up for bigger wins in the future.

Robert Reich is the author of Aftershock: The Next Economy and America's Future, now in bookstores. This post originally appeared at RobertReich.org.
